GreenTip: TerraCycle It

Terracycle Home Depot Collection Bin

You may have seen TerraCycle Plant Food on the shelf at your local Home Depot; it’s the liquefied worm poop fertilizer packaged in a used soda bottle with an end-run sprayer top, the feature product from a brand that’s gotten plenty of attention for being one of the greenest around. The purpose behind TerraCycle products is simple: Make everything–and they do mean everything–from waste, whether it’s the contents, like the lovely-sounding liquefied worm poor, or the product itself, like the lunch box made from used drink pouches.

While seeking out TerraCycle products for use in your home is one good way to get involved with a company who’s truly focused on reducing by reusing, you can also keep an eye out for TerraCycle collection bins that will soon be appearing in major chains near you, stores like Home Depot, OfficeMax, Petco and Best Buy (all in the New York/ New Jersey area for now, but with expansion expected very soon). It’s part of the pilot phase of a new program from TerraCycle to put “recycling” bins for products specific to the customers of a store (like caulking tubes at Home Depot). The bins will make it easier for people to recycle items they might not be able to recycle in other places at a place they’d likely be going to regardless. And it will give TerraCycle more ingredients to work with in their products–Pet food bags might be made into tote bags and used saw blades into clocks, for example.

The bins, however, are not the only area you can get involved with TerraCycle’s quest. Organizations like schools and churches can create a “collection brigade” and gather things like used food wrappers and corks to send back to Terracycle, who’ll donate a couple cents to charity for most items received.

You can find more information on how you can TerraCycle here.

  1. I heard about these guys before, but never tried this before-far out. This is some pretty cool cradle-to-cradle stuff (hopefully I’m using that term correctly) ;-)
