Greenews: EcoLogo Program Ready to Raise Their Standards

EcoLogo logo

Although it’s been around since 1988, the EcoLogo certification program hasn’t received the media attention of programs like Cradle-to-Cradle, partially owing to the fact that it was created (and initially only in) Canada. But the lack of publicity doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the more respected environmental certification programs in North America and a valuable resource for consumers seeking independent third-party reviews on the ecological impact of the products they purchase.

Now EcoLogo is getting ready to revise the standards they set in 2000 for the certification of personal care products. The original personal care product standards specified that a product could display the EcoLogo certification seal if the product met industry performance standards, was not tested on animals, was not toxic or carcinogenic, was readily biodegradable, was manufactured with recyclable materials, and was not formulated with certain substances. The new standards will include all the existing conditions, but will also look into the potential issues like endocrine disruptors, reproductivity toxicity and allergens. Once the new standards are in place, you can buy EcoLogo-certified personal care products with the knowledge that they’re even greener then they’ve ever been.

In addition to a certification label that you can look for on items themselves, you can browse the Green Products and Services search tool on the EcoLogo website (professional purchasers also have a search tool specific to their needs).
