Green Reading: Revolution In a Bottle

terracycle-book

The last time we wrote about TerraCycle it was about their announcement that they would be setting up recycling bins for traditionally non-recyclable items at a variety of major chain stores around the country, including Home Depot and OfficeMax. Today’s post isn’t so much about the little green company that could, but about its founder, Tom Szaky, and his new book, Revolution In a Bottle (printed on 100% recycled materials).

The book is a must-read if you run (or are hoping to one day run) your own green business, but Szaky’s observations on the blending of the business world and the environmental world are interesting enough to keep even those with no green business involvement reading. Hungarian-born Szaky’s quick rise to become one of the top young entrepreneurs is pretty riveting—especially his jump from Princeton to worm poop fertilizer—but we think the best aspect between these pages is that Szaky’s ideas about how businesses should be run are both good for the planet for good for those running the businesses. He suggests a three-way goal for businesses: good for people, good for the planet, and, of course, good for profits, and the equal attention TerraCycle seems to have dedicated to all three aspirations is encouraging for anyone considering similar pursuits.

Revolution In a Bottle gets serious Greenzer approval for the section where it talks about consumers not wanting to pay more just to have green. Szaky thinks people should be able to have green products at prices they can afford, and we couldn’t agree more!
