Eco Products for a Flea-Free Pet

Nobody likes fleas–dogs, cats or humans–but if you turn to common flea collars to solve the problem you’re putting your pets, yourself and your children at risk. These collars expose you to carcinogens at levels 1000 times greater than the EPA’s acceptable limit for children and 500 times the limit for adults. That’s not something to take lightly.
Now the Natural Resources Defense Council is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to remove propoxur and tetrachlorvinphos (both of which pose serious cancer and neurological risks) from pet products after releasing a study that found high levels of both toxic chemicals on pet fur after wearing ordinary pet collars. In the meantime, stop using flea collars and start relying on flea-fighting alternatives. These eco products can keep the buggers at bay, too.
Combing: You can help reduce fleas by combing your pet’s fur regularly. Bamboo Care’s cat grooming set comes with a palm-sized flea comb that’ll help you remove fleas and their eggs. If you find fleas in the comb, drown them in soap and water.
Bathing: Any soap will rid your pet of fleas, but Pal Dog’s Calming Lavender Shampoo & Massage Bath is sulfate-free and made to make your pup’s coat look fab. It’ll soothe dry doggy skin with organic aloe and lavender and condition fur with organic calendula and marshmallow.
For other ways to protect your pet, watch the NRDC’s flea-fighting video.
