Green Swag Spotted at the MTV Movie Awards

You can’t have an award show without over-the-top gifting suites and last night’s MTV Movie Awards was no exception. Serious amounts of swag were passed out including some green goodies. At the 2009 MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet Style Lounge celebrities walked away with Envi Reusable Bags made from sustainable materials and bamboo woven pants from organic clothing boutique Jonano.
And at Oakley’s Intro to Summer event, celeb guests including Vanessa Hudgens and Zachary Levi got a pair of Bob Burnquist Recycled Gascan sunglasses made from recycled parts and bamboo. Burnquist, a pro skateboarder, is an environmentalist, too. He co-founded the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC), which dismantles wooden ramps at skateboarding events and recycles them by donating the materials to inner city groups. Oakley also saved a pair for Adrien Grenier.
But while it’s great that the gifting suites are going at least a little bit green, the entire concept is far from eco-friendly. These gifting suites are really nothing more than a giant PR stunt. The last thing celebrities need is more stuff. The production of all that stuff wastes our resources and causes pollution. And chances are a lot of this stuff never actually gets used. Plus, the un-eco gifts ofter err on the side of very not green. Case in point: A trip to the Carribbean–we’re guessing the flights and 7 night stay didn’t come with carbon credits.
