Tesla Recalls Roadsters

telsa-roadsters-recalled

Everyone’s been drooling over the Tesla Roadsters—for reasons both green and other—but the latest news on the electric sports cars may make them a little less enticing: 345 of the 400 Tesla Roadsters that have been delivered are being recalled due to under-torqued bolts that could cause serious problems. Not what you want when you’ve paid almost (or over) $100,000 for a vehicle.

Before you write off the Roadster and allot the extra $100,000 you’ve got laying around to something else, however, you should know that Tesla is stating that the bolt problem is an issue caused by Lotus (the manufacturer of the Roadster chassis) and has resulted in some Lotus Elises and Exiges also being recalled, meaning that there are no issues with the electrical powertrain that makes the Roadster so unique (and appealing) and silencing any electric car critics. Plus, Tesla is offering to pick up any Roadsters and take them in for repairs, if needed, and complimentary full-vehicle inspections and software upgrades. That’s the kind of service you could expect if you invest in an electric sports car.

You may not want to commit to the Roadster just yet, though; Tesla’s CEO recently revealed that a new version of the Roadster is in the works and will forego its Lotus base to be better and—much to the joy of tall people everywhere—much roomier. There’s no word on when exactly the new Roadster would be available and it likely wouldn’t be for quite some time, but we’re guessing it’s going to take you awhile to save up a hundred thousand dollars anyway. In the meantime you could always pick up a Tesla Model S at almost half the cost (you’ll just have to wait until it’s delivered in 2012).
