Paul McCartney Campaigning for Meatless Meals

All you need is love…and a little less meat in your diet. Paul McCartney (along with his daughters Stella—the well known fashion designer—and Mary, pictured above) has thrown his support behind a new campaign called Meat Free Monday, which aims to encourage people all over the globe to have one meat-free day every week, for the sake of their own personal health and the environment.

Some may write off the McCartney’s support as a simple case of vegetarians pushing their beliefs on others, but that’s a far cry from what they’re suggesting. The environmental effects of our meat consumption are documented—the United Nations even estimates that meat could be one of the top two or three issues facing our environment. Eco-effects from meat are also multi-layered, with greenhouse gas emissions coming from the methane gas emitted by cows and from the preparation and transportation of the meat itself. Adding to the negativity is the fact that less meat consumption could mean fewer starving people all across the globe and an all around better use of resources.

Instead of coming out swinging at all things meat, however, the McCartneys and their slew of supporters (including Yoko Ono, Moby, Chris Martin and Kevin Spacey) are only asking everyone to make one meal a week vegetarian (of course, if you enjoy it you could certainly add a few more) something that most can agree is easy enough to do. The environmental benefits of doing so, in turn, may be even better than if you were to avoid using your car one day a week—an even more difficult task.

At the Meat Free Monday campaign site you can find information on how to initiate a vegetarian day in your week (including yummy recipes from Paul’s late wife, Linda McCartney and top chefs) and how to spread the word to others you know, as well as facts and figures that will show you just what an effect opting for meat has on the planet. Mondays will never be the same.
