10 Green Celebrities Who Tweet

green-celebrities-on-twitter

By now you probably know that it’s easy to find a celebrity spilling their thoughts (in 140 characters or less) on Twitter—sometimes to the point that they’ll end up wishing they hadn’t—but the chirping social site can be used for more than just gossip and a peek into a lifestyle you’ll likely never be able to afford, Twitter can be a place to learn and to speak out (as in the case of the Iran opposition protests). So why not follow a few green celebrities who will let you into their jetset lifestyles (or electric car lifestyles) and, in the process, give you some ideas on the environment and what you can do to improve things. Here’s our list of 10 green celebrities who tweet (don’t have a Twitter? You can sign up here):

ed-begley-jr 1. Ed Begley Jr., actor and author (edbegleyjr)

You can’t talk about green celebrities without mentioning Ed Begley Jr., who’s just as famous for his electric car promoting as he is for his roles at this point. On his Twitter you’ll find links to his website, excerpts from his book and notices providing you with plenty of places to check out Ed in person.

jason-mraz 2. Jason Mraz, musician (jason_mraz)

Even if you’ve never heard the name Jason Mraz, you’ve likely heard his airwave-dominating songs “Lucky” and “I’m Yours” and he’s worth paying attention to. Mraz recently finished installing some serious solar power providers at his home and speaks out on environmental issues through both his Twitter and his blog (which he links to on Twitter when new articles come out).

jeffrey-hollender 3. Jeffrey Hollender, Seventh Generation co-founder (JeffHollender)

While not a Hollywood celebrity, Hollender has a place in most eco-activists’ hearts as the co-founder of Seventh Generation and the man responsible for really getting their all-natural products out into the world. Hollender is also a very clever guy and on his Twitter you’ll learn a lot about the environment and what people are doing that will help it/harm it.

summer-rayne-oakes 4. Summer Rayne Oakes, model, television host and author (sroakes)

A green celebrity in the realm of fame enjoyed by Ed Begley Jr., Summer Rayne Oakes always has plenty of tips on staying hip while going green and her Twitter is no exception. Tune in if you’ve ever had doubts about how smart models are and Summer will prove to you that brains can go along with beauty.

david-de-rothschild 5. David De Rothschild, activist and author (DRexplore)

David is more than just a member of the Rothschild banking family of England, he’s an avid explorer and activist (with a great sense of humor too, as you’ll see on his Twitter) and he’s considered by most in the green community to be a man to watch. His Plastiki expedition is one example of his exciting endeavors, but you can stay informed on all of them on his Twitter.

al-gore 6. Al Gore, former Vice President, author and activist (algore)

There’s not a lot we need to say about this one. He’s Al Gore. He has over a million followers on Twitter. Following him will definitely be educational and give you opportunities to aid Al in his quests. Case closed.

josie-maran 7. Josie Maran, model, actress and founder of Josie Maran Cosmetics (josie_maran)

Maran’s Twitter features the usual little blurbs about daily activities and thoughts, but the big draw here is Twitter posts for each update to her blog, which features information on what makes makeup green and how to look great without sacrificing your commitment to sustainability. A perfect blend of beauty tips and eco-friendly education.

barack-obama 8. Barack Obama, President of the United States (BarackObama)

It’s not easy to surpass Al Gore in Twitter followers, but being President helps. His Twitter isn’t always about green issues but they do feature, and it’ll help you stay current with what our government is doing (or not doing) in regard to our planet, while giving you the chance to take part.

stella-mccartney 9. Stella McCartney, designer (stellafashion)

A Twitter for a true fashion addict, the focus is really on the clothes and accessories here, but McCartney’s eco-aims (many of her designs are now greener) still come through. Expect updates on her work with her father for the Meat Free Monday campaign.

greenzer 10. Greenzer, green shopping website (greenzer)

Not following us on Twitter yet? Start now. We may not be a celebrity  per se, but we will keep you informed on Celebrites Gone Green, as well as in the know with green news, tips and product reviews.
