What’s On Your Food?

Ever wonder what kind of pesticides have touched your foods? Sure we’d love to buy only organic produce, but chances are that’s not feasible for the average American. And, even though you don’t want to hear it,  organic produce can harbor some pesticide residue, too. That’s where the new site What’s On My Food? comes in.

The Pesticide Action Network (PAN) created a database of scary statistics about the food we eat to draw attention to the adverse effects of using pesticides. Don’t check out the site during lunch, you’ll lose your appetite. Before you even start clicking on the foods you eat, disturbing facts flash across the screen: “The average American child gets 5+ servings of pesticide residues in their food and water each day.” and “8 different pesticide residues were detected in one strawberry sample.”

Even if you’ve memorized the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides or have made it your favorite iPhone app, this site is sure to offer you some new information. Though, the information on What’s on My Food? ranks high in the gross out factor, it doesn’t deliver actionable solutions for consumers beyond signing a petition or donating to PAN. So you might be better off doing what you can to avoid the biggest pesticide offenders as determined by EWG.
