Top 5 Green Travel Mugs

We probably don’t need to tell you that bringing your coffee (or other hot beverage of choice) with you in a travel mug is much better for the planet that picking up a cup at the coffee shop. You’ll eliminate the waste created by your disposable cup, sleeve, lid and the coffee filter (if you buy a reusable version). Plus, you can control what kind of beans you’re brewing (opting for Fair Trade and organic, hopefully). Even if you’re addicted to your local java supplier’s offerings, bringing a reusable travel mug will still cut down on waste and often save you a little cash at the register. Here are our five favorite green travel mugs:

FOR THE CLUTZ

Timolino Spillproof Travel Mug, $22.50

Anyone who shows up to work every morning wearing their dark roast should consider this stainless steel spillproof travel mug from Timolino. It’s got a steady base that won’t tip—even in a desk disaster—and a Press’N'Sip Lever design that means coffee can only escape when you want it to and only into your mouth.

i-am-not-a-paper-cup-coffee-mug

FOR THE DESIGN FANATIC

I Am Not a Paper Cup Reusable Coffee Mug, $19.95

This reusable mug is a nice homage to the paper cups you’re trying to avoid and will definitely get a few comments. The mug itself is porcelain (with a silicone lid), so it’s a little heavier than most; using it as a mainly stay-at-the-office mug is a good idea. Unlike real paper cups this reusable version can stand up to the microwave (for afternoon caffeine reheats) and the dishwasher.

bpa-free-thermos

FOR THE SOUP LOVER

Earthlust Feather Insulated Mug, $21.50

If you like a slurpable lunch just as much as a morning cup of joe, this Earthlust thermos can be either a soup transporter or a typical travel mug. It’s Fair Trade manufactured and made from BPA-free stainless steel, so it’s a greener way to get your lunch—or coffee—to work hot (and it will keep it that way for up to 8 hours).

tea-travel-mug

FOR THE TEA DRINKER

Timolino Vacuum Metro Tea Mug, $18.99

Just because you prefer a loose leaf tea to a freshly ground coffee, doesn’t mean you should have to go without on the way to work. Throw your favorite variety in this tea mug with included stainless steel mesh filter and enjoy. Stainless steel and leakproof (even in a backpack or purse), you can even use this to brew a mini-batch of iced tea the night before.

eco-friendly-travel-mug

FOR THE ECO-ACTIVIST

Down to Earth Mug with Tea Filter, $26.78

Although not an aesthetic dream, this reusable mug will last for ages and is made only from stainless steel, which is one of the most recyclable materials around. It’s equally at home in your house, camping or in the office, and it’s longevity and eco-friendly design give it a dark green ranking.
