Green Stocking Stuffers for Kids

For most of us the holiday season will mean at least a few gifts (both bought and received), and some of those will usually be stuffed inside a stocking. It’s getting easier to think of eco-friendly Christmas gift ideas as more and more products add earth-conscious touches, but when it comes to the smaller items in stockings, a lot of us head straight to the nearest super-sized store. While you might find some green goods there, you’ll probably end up stocking your stockings with little plastic trinkets and all-artificial treats, which is no good if you’re trying to make every aspect of your holiday celebrations a little greener.

Stuffing stockings with less stuff is one quick way to cut down on the carbon impact, but you can also pick out eco-friendly stocking stuffers, like the favorites we’ve listed below (don’t forget to check back next week for grown up stocking stuffers).

plan-toys-mushroom-kaleidoscope

Plan Toys Mushroom Kaleidoscope, $4.95

Every kids gets a kick out of staring into a kaleidoscope (even if they’re soon pretending it’s a spyglass instead), and this one from Plan Toys is made of recycled rubberwood without chemical processing. It’s also a steal.

amigurumi-style-bunnyamigurumi-bunny

This stuffed bunny is as cute as it is hard to pronounce, and promises a little craft time as you and your youngster crochet the rabbit from reused, recycled and repurposed materials (everything you need is in the package).

yummy-earth-organic-super-sour-pops

Yummy Earth Super Sour Lollipops, $1.94

marys-softdough

Mary’s Softdough, $8.95

Playdoh is pretty popular in the kid world (who hasn’t played with the colorful clay?), but it’s ingredient are thought to include petroleum deritives, preservatives, fragrance and surfactants (Hasbro won’t get specific). Considering your child will probably end up ingesting a bit of their play clay at some point, why not opt for a natural one like Mary’s Softdough. All the ingredients are edible—not that you should eat it on purpose—and it’s just as fun and colorful as its mainstream counterpart.

envirosax-kids-bag

Envirosax Kid’s Bag, $7.95

You’ve got to love gifts that get your kids start on green habits, and these reusable shopping bags will do just that. They can cart them around the house during playtime, use them as lunch bags, and bring them when they “help” you shop at the grocery store.

vegan-dark-chocolate-mint-bites

Organic Fair Trade Dark Chocolate Vegan Mint Bites, $32.95

Stuffing a stocking full of chocolate treats seems harmless—well, aside from the sugar rush that follows—but much of the chocolate on shelves is grown under terrible conditions that see both the planet and some of its people exposed to dangers. These Fair Trade Vegan Mint Bites are guilt-free (and if you children can’t get past dark chocolate and mint, more for you!).

plan-toys-taxi-and-police-car
