Malin Akerman first showed up on the celebrity scene after her performance as a captivating—yet very crazy—-new wife in The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller, and since then she’s gone to star in major silver screen flicks like Watchmen and, most recently, Couple’s Retreat. With her movie roster increasing all the time, Akerman’s inevitably going to be doing some traveling and consuming (and with family scattered all around the world, from Sweden to Canada, it’s even more so), but the star is balancing out her new Hollywood benefits with eco-activity that fits her goals.

Akerman drives a hybrid car—then again, what celebrity doesn’t own one these days?—volunteers for the National Resource Defense Council, recycles, composts and shops vintage. She grew up with green habits, but says fell away a bit when she began working in Los Angeles. After seeing an Inconvenient Truth, however, she (like many people) felt a new pull to improve her carbon footprint and increased her efforts.

This Christmas, like more years, Akerman will be spending time in different corners of the world with different relatives, but there are also some eco-friendly elements she’s hoping to add to the festivities. Akerman will be including a family of 13 in Africa in her gift giving (a great gift idea for your family to consider too) and hopes to eat Christmas dinner by candlelight, pointing out the energy that could be saved if families around the world did likewise and turned out the lights for that hour—not to the mention the old-fashioned romance it would lend to the feasting.
