Target to Turn Billboards Into Eco-Friendly Bags

target_billboards_08-092

Target’s latest gotta-have-it fashion launch is a little different from their usual GO International featured fashion designers like Loomstate’s Spring 2009 collection. This time, they’re experimenting in upcycled fashion. From Labor Day weekend through October 31, Target’s Times Square billboards will feature commissioned art from Michael Anderson, Josh Goldstein and other emerging artists. But what happens after the billboards come down is the most exciting–the vinyl billboards will be made into 1,600 limited-edition bags.

Not only will you get a piece of the art that was on-display high above Times Square, the upcycled bag is a tote designed by Anna Sui. 90% of each bag will be made from the vinyl billboard material, and have a few add-ons such as black enamel studs and other rock-and-roll details.

The eco-friendly bags go on sale on Target.com today, Friday, September 4, for $29.99.  Click here to read more

Keds Gone Green

Keds and Loomstate have come together to bring you some great new kicks in fun new patterns. If you’re a fan of Loomstate designers Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn you may recognize some of their signature prints.  In true 80s style, the shoes are lace-free and come in five different women’s designs with lots of colors to choose from.

The shoes are made from 100 percent organic canvas, 100 percent recycled insole board, with a gum rubber sole. But the designers didn’t stop there with their eco-friendly efforts, the packaging is minimal, too. While most  new shoes are stuffed with and surrounded by tissue, these Keds are tissue free and come in reused, recycled shoe boxes. Click here to read more

Top 5 Green Jeans for Men

Ah,  jeans, the staple of the modern wardrobe. One half of the crucial combo of jeans and a t-shirt. In recent years jeans have only risen in popularity, with many of us now able to wear them to work, and because most of us own so many pairs (and will buy more as needed/desired), it’s a great idea to consider opting for green jeans.

At its base, denim is really cotton and cotton is one of the most pesticide heavy crops in the United States. With pesticides still being studied for environmental and health dangers (aside from the known ones), cutting way back on our consumption of pesticide-heavy cotton is currently the best way to minimize pesticide’s impact on the planet and our lives. When it comes to men’s jeans, the best way to do that is to buy organic cotton pairs or ones that are made from materials that don’t require the use of pesticides (like hemp and bamboo).

The big hesitation most guys have about buying eco-friendly jeans is the cost, but don’t assume that all environmentally-safe denim is going to cost more than the jeans you normally buy; while their are some green jeans that cost a pretty penny (over $150), by shopping online you can find earth-aware pairs for under $100. Here are five of our favorites:

1. Reef Heritage Organic Denim, $62.00

Perfect for the guy who likes some style to his jean but doesn’t want to go slim-fit or too trendy. The dark wash is a smart choice for the office and your dinner-and-drinks date afterward, too, and the 100% organic cotton denim means this pair is pesticide free.

2. Patagonia Hi-Wire Hemp Jeans, $80.00

Trust Patagonia to come up with a way to create jeans that doesn’t mean pesticides and incorporates recycling. These jeans are made from organic hemp and recycled polyester for serious durability with seriously minimal impact. A worthy offering for those who work outdoors or who just like to spend their time there. Click here to read more

Affordable Eco Style Arrives at Target

Loomstate for TargetLoomstate for Target WomenRogan Gregory and Scott Hahn have been designing their certified organic cotton line Loomstate since 1994–but it’s a designer line, at designer prices. Now they’re bringing their same environmentally responsible and edgy design aesthetic to the masses with a limited edition collection of organic clothes at Target.

Appropriate for the season, you’ll find summer dresses, board shorts and bikinis. And there’s a mix of trendy pieces like a plaid shirt dress and basic staples like tanks and tees. Best of all, the cotton used is 100% certified organic cotton. Choosing organic clothes means the organic cotton was grown without the use of pesticides, which in turn is good for our soil and our waterways. Click here to read more

Breathe New Life into Your T-shirts

Daily Greenz #137

Barneys_recycle
Want to see your old shirts repurposed as part of an exclusive Loomstate t-shirt collection?  Between April 13th to 27th, bring your old duds to Barneys New York, receive 20% off all Loomstate clothing, and look forward to seeing your shirts “re-fashioned” in the Barneys for Holiday 2008 collection!

The Sundance Channel recently partnered up with Barneys New York and Loomstate to promote Season 2 of THE GREEN by launching this new eco-fashion idea of recycled shirts.  The show’s purpose is to inspire viewers to make changes in their lives to positively impact the environment, without sacrificing style or quality.  The t-shirt campaign is their way of demonstrating that such a change is possible.  Loomstate is a fitting designer for the t-shirt recycling program, as they normally use 100% certified organic materials to make eco-luxe clothing.

As an added incentive, proceeds from the t-shirt recycling program will go to 1% for the Planet, which is a growing network of businesses that donate 1% of their sales to help environmental organizations worldwide.  If you’re looking to do a little spring cleaning, now’s the time!  Find a Barneys store near you at www.sundancechannel.com/ecommunity.
