Celebrities Gone Green: Reese Witherspoon Stays Photogenic with Phyto

reese-witherspoon-hair-productphyto-hair-products

It’s easy to be envious of the tresses of Hollywood’s mega-stars, whose coifs always look polished and pretty thanks to the best hair stylists, flattering lighting and hair products that really do what they say they will (a rare occurrence in the world of sprays, mousses, shampoos and conditioners). Reese Witherspoon is a perfect example, with blond hair that always has a slightly ethereal glow (and, briefly, stunning brunette locks) and you can steal some of her hair success—without having to fork over the money for her mega bucks stylist—by trying the Phyto line.

One of the biggest celeb favorites for glossy locks, Phyto is a French-founded botanical-based line that’s been receiving rave reviews since it debuted in the 50s, and not only does Phyto work wonders on hair, it’s greener than most hair products you’ll find on shelves (don’t you love it when a product is both incredibly effective and good for the planet?).

Witherspoon’s said to love (and use) just about every product from the Phyto line, all of which utilize botanical ingredients instead of un-pronounceable chemicals to achieve perfect hair. And while you may hesitate at the thought of putting ingredients like egg, rum, garlic and horseradish on your head, a couple weeks of using the products will clear up all doubts. Phyto also takes their goal of environmentally-friendly products further by ensuring that the packaging for all the botanical-laden products is 100% recyclable, making the Phyto line green from the inside out. Use Cinnamon to Stop Germs

antibacterial cinnamon

With H1N1 rampant and cold season lurking, it’s easy to feel tempted to pick up an industrial size-bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer and apply on the hour, but doing so may actually leave you exposed to even more intimidating bacteria. Antibacterial soaps and antibacterial hand sanitizers have been linked as a contributor to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (the only thing worse than regular old bacteria).

Worse than the fact that antibacterial hand sanitizer and soap can actually breed the biggest, baddest bacteria is the fact that you don’t even need it. Many researchers have stated that regular soap, with thorough hand washing, is just as effective, and there are natural alternatives to antibacterial hand sanitizers that have received amazing results in lab tests. The best Mother Nature-based option? Cinnamon oil. Researchers have found cinnamon oil effective even in hospital settings and against infections as serious as strep and E. Coli.

One way to harness the germ-fighting powers of cinnamon oil for yourself is to use it to make your own hand sanitizing oil. Just mix a few drops of cinnamon oil, eucalyptus oil and lemon oil in a base of sweet almond oil and apply throughout the day like you would a moisturizer. Click here to read more

Top 5 Eco-Friendly Deodorants

Aluminum antiperspirants smells like trouble to us, with their neurotoxicity and the detrimental effects they’ve been linked to in testing, but that’s not the only whiff of danger about the stuff; artificial fragrances and ingredient like BHT have also been the cause of concern (and rank high on the danger scale in the Skin Deep cosmetics rankings). Opting for a simple deodorant instead of an antiperspirant/deodorant improves the situation slightly, but a much better method is to pick up a natural deodorant that relies on plant ingredients to keep you smelling fresh and feeling dry all day long. Here are five of our favorites:

FOR WOMEN

Nature’s Gate Persimmon & Rose Geranium, $4.18

This stick will win out over Secret any day with its light floral scent (like fresh flowers instead of the heavy synthetic smell of conventional deodorants) and the rose geranium and mint in the formula are natural antiseptics. Most of the ingredients are organic and it’s free of parabens and aluminum, so your conscience will be just as clean as you! Click here to read more

Celebrities Gone Green: Emily Deschanel is Green With NVEY ECO

emily-deschanelnvey-eco-makeup

Her sister, Zooey Deschanel, may get a bit more press these days thanks to box office flicks like 500 Days of Summer and musical performances in the group She & Him, but when it comes to the world of green, older sibling Emily Deschanel is the name everyone knows.

The eldest Deschanel adheres to a strict vegan diet, gets around in a Prius, and reveres Ed Begley Jr. as an eco-friendly role model. Even at work on her hit show Bones, Emily Deschanel is always advocating those around her to get greener by using biodegradable plates and utensils and reusable aluminum water bottles (you can also spot her wearing some eco-friendly accessories, like recycled gold necklaces, on screen).

Further dispelling the myth that going green means giving up fashion and beauty products, Emily Deschanel stays on trend in Hollywood without wavering on her environmental lifestyle. Click here to read more

Celebrities Gone Green: Alicia Silverstone Touches Up with EcoTools

When it comes to the environment, Alicia Silverstone is anything but clueless—she’s a bona fide green gal who’s truly excited about the earth, and one of the biggest steps she advocates taking as you go green is switching to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Regardless of whether it’s something you’d adopt full time or not, the reality is that the facts do back her up—a vegetarian diet is much easier on the planet in a range of ways, from water conservation to saving the rainforest. Silverstone’s even got a vegan cookbook (titled The Kind Diet) underway and it will be debuting in the fall.

Her latest partnership, however, is about fabulous makeup instead of food. Silverstone has partnered with eco-friendly makeup tools line EcoTools to create her own green makeup bags and brushes, which will be available for purchase in December. Click here to read more
