If you’ve got a message you want to spread, there’s arguably no better way to get buzz than to have it delivered by a bevy of world famous supermodels in various states of undress, and that was just the idea that model and Columbia University student Cameron Russell wanted to tap into for her efforts with 350, an organization dedicated to encouraging action from world leaders this December at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference.
Russell’s short supermodel striptease video was released in conjunction with the Global Day of Climate Action (on October 24th) and demonstrates our current C02 parts per million level of 387, which is 37 parts more than the 350 parts per million that scientists have deemed a safe upper limit for for C02 in our atmosphere. As the models, who include Shannan Click and Heidi Mount, discuss our need to lower our parts per million number, they shed layers of clothing—all this global warming is making them hot…er, hotter than usual—and when they reach 352 parts per million they pause in their underwear and state that the world needs to get 387 down to 350 before they’ll see any more. Hollywood parties tend to run completely counter to the ideas of the environmental movement. Where going green is about using only what’s necessary and cutting back on the consumerism, most L.A. fetes are all about excess and laden swag bags. Fortunately, as more and more Americans have made the decision to go green, Hollywood has started to follow suit. Eco-friendly gifts are showing up in goodie bags at award shows and red carpets are starting to get green thanks to hybrid arrivals and more thorough recycling programs.
For their fall lineup party, Fox stayed with the environmental theme and held their fifth annual Eco-Casino Party, where the channel’s stars came out to promote their shows and do a little green gambling thanks to recycled poker chips and faux casino tables.
From start to finish, every detail of the affair was considered for it’s impact and on the earth and Fox took steps to make it as carbon-friendly as possible (with carbon offsets helping where planning couldn’t). Guests—like Glee’s Lea Michele and Dollhouse’s Eliza Dushku (pictured above)—learned of the event through e-invites instead of traditional paper printed invitations and those without hybrid rides of their own were offered eco-friendly transportation to the event (instead of the usual fuel-guzzling limos). Inside the Eco-Casino, LED lighting shed a green glow on things, local and organic food fed party goers, and rented reusable decor ensured that nothing was wasted for the sake of ambiance. Alicia Silverstone will forever be famous for her starring role in Clueless, but if you ask her, she’ll probably tell you that the most clueless thing in her past was her animal product-including diet. The gone-green star has been living a vegan lifestyle for about 11 years and she advocates the switch to everyone for health, beauty and environmental reasons. In fact, Silverstone supports the switch so much that she’s penned a book (titled The Kind Diet) on the subject, and in conjunction with the book release, she’s launched a website called The Kind Life.
On her website, Silverstone promises she will offer up a steady stream of information on eco-focused advice on a range of topics (food, health, house, style, and environment). Unlike Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP e-newsletter, however, The Kind Life site also features a forum where readers can participate in a green social network and provide ideas for each other. Wyclef Jean, the socially-active solo artist and former member of The Fugees, falls pretty far from any music video stereotypes in his real life. He’s frequently performing at benefit concerts, started his own nonprofit foundation (Yéle Haiti), is a Haitian Goodwill Ambassador, and has now joined the ranks of the Timberland Earthkeeper Heroes, a group of eco-focused individuals that Timberland has assembled to promote going green.
Timberland, like Wyclef Jean, has switched things up from their reputation (as a construction-site staple) to become one of the greenest shoe companies around, and it’s rare that a month goes by without the shoe company making an appearance on the Greenzer blog, whether it’s for a new LEED-certified store or a new addition to their seriously eco-focused Earthkeeper shoe line. By joining together with Wyclef Jean, Timberland is hoping to aid in his environmental and humanitarian efforts in his native Haiti and give Timberland-wearers a chance to do the same. Miley Cyrus is considered one of Hollywood’s hottest up-and-comers and can already cause a scandal like the best of them, but when it comes to shopping, we’re glad to see she’s already learning to incorporate some greener choices—even if her carbon footprint would benefit more from her getting rid of her private jet. Cyrus has been spotted all over LA with a stack of Alex and Ani bangles on her wrist, and she’s not the only tinseltown star who loves the Bohemian-inspired line: Vanessa Hudgens and Jessica Simpson are just a few who consider the brand a favorite.
It’s no wonder the Alex and Ani jewelery is so popular, either, with their big stacks of bangles fitting in with the layered look and their charm details adding some unique flair (their signature design has made them a constant feature in plenty of magazines). One of the best aspects of the Carolyn Rafaelian-designed line, however, is the fact that all the pieces are made from eco-friendly materials, like recycled brass, and are crafted right here in the United States.
