Guys, if there’s a jacket you should buy for fall/winter, the Holden Sparrow Jacket is it. For one thing, an eco-friendly jacket isn’t the easiest thing to find–well, not if you want one that’s going to hold up to rain, sleet, snow and the other perils of wintery weather. Nylon and polyester–two very common jacket materials–are, when it comes down to it, petroleum based and require a lot of chemicals (not to mention greenhouse gases) during their production, even if some argue that they use less energy in their upkeep. The fact is, this is an area where you can’t really compromise on what you’re looking for in the product; it’s just impractical and unpleasant to trek around cold. With the Sparrow jacket you don’t have to compromise your internal body temperature or your green code of conduct. Click here to read more

For as many people you find who love Dr. Bronner’s and can’t live without it, you’ll find a matching amount who take one look at the text-laden labels, which sprouts statements about Spaceship Earth and the Moral ABCs, and decide to do without. Yes, the advice clamoring for your attention on top of each bottle can be a little overwhelming, but this is one case where you definitely don’t want to throw the baby out with the (organically sudsed) bath water.
If the philosophy of Dr. Bronner is a little kooky for you, focus instead on the product inside those bottles–truly natural and organic soaps. In fact, the Dr. Bronner’s company is so passionate about truly organic, natural products that they recently took several companies that advertise themselves as organic to court for making false claims, although not before giving them warnings and chances to change the way they make their products. They brought to the media’s attention ingredients that companies were using that could not actually be organic and organic “certifications” that were allowing conventional products into goods. New York Fashion Week has just ended and we’re now up to speed on what to look for in the spring/summer fashions for 2009 (gals who’ve gone green can still be fashionable, after all), but we’re more concerned with what to do about fall…seeing as it’s actually fall. Perhaps the most popular makeup motif being pushed for autumn is the smoky eye–trailed only slightly by purple tones on both eyes and lips. Although, to be realistic, the smoky eye is never really out of style (which is a bit of an issue for those of us who can’t seem to recreate its dark mystique). Click here to read more

Does it get much worse than walking to work on a cold, rainy day and arriving with your socks soaked with water and your toes frozen to the point that they look dead? But with gas prices high–and public transit costs up as a result–walking is not only a good choice for the sake of the earth, but also for the sake of your budget. And it doesn’t look like things will be changing anytime soon. Still, we can take steps to make the journey a little easier, and the Toetally Felt Boot is one such step. A green one, too.
If the environment itself could design a boot, it might very well be the Toetally Felt. It’s lined with bamboo, has jute laces and jute in the upper, a natural latex pedbed with cotton canvas cover, natural crepe rubber midsole, 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms…and holds everything together with water-based glues. And it’s made by Simple Shoes, a company that is honestly and realistically striving to make sustainable products; they admit that they aren’t perfect, but are constantly working on improving their processes.
