Paper napkins rank up there in the super wasteful category with toilet paper and tissues. Think about all the paper napkins you and your family go through at a meal at home and all the extra napkins you grab to guaruntee you won’t run out and get stuck looking like a slob when you’re eating on the go. Last year, Oprah urged everyone to use one less paper napkin every day. But you can do better.
According to the NRDC if every US household replaced one pack of 250-count virgin fiber napkins with 100% recycled ones, 1 million trees could be saved. You could start buying Seventh Generation 100% recycled napkins made from 80% post-consumer recycled content. Or you could take it one step further and give up paper napkins altogether. We think Amy Smart has a rather fitting last name because from what we’ve seen of her involvement with eco-focused organizations (and her personal green endeavors), she’s a very smart woman—one who understands that getting greener needs to become a priority for all of us. On screen she pops up in roles in movies that range from intense action flicks like Crank to lighthearted comedies like Just Friends, but offscreen she says steady with her commitment to investing her time and energy with charities that work to promote green living and preserve our planet and opting for sustainable switches in her life, like red carpet outfits made from bamboo.
One of the biggest organizations that Smart is involved with is the Environmental Media Association (EMA), whose Board of Directors reads like an awards party invitation list with big names like Blythe Danner, Jeffrey Tambor and Lance Boss. The EMA—and Amy Smart—strive to involve Americans with green concepts through events, celebrity role models and environmentally-minded changes to film and video production (including greening plots). This month, Smart joined the EMA for a new campaign focused on introducing organic gardening to LA schools. The campaign brings awareness of organic options to a younger generation and provides a chance for kids to experience the greenery (both literal and metaphorical) of gardening in urban areas where they might not otherwise learn about it. Need an excuse to buy a new pair of shoes? We’ll give you several reasons to add Rocket Dog’s Planet Pup Organic Cotton Wedges to your collection.
First of all, these eco-chic sandals are right in line with the mainstream fashion trends, too. Florals are huge this season and the trend tops off these peep-toes gorgeously. Plus, the straw-covered wedge heel plays to the cork trend that’s gaining momentum this season in the sandal world.
Now, for the eco-friendly fashion points. These sandals from Rocket Dog’s Eco Luv line have sustainable features, too. The main part of the shoe is made from organic cotton, the insole board is recycled, the sole is made from recycled EVA rubber and it’s all held together with more eco-friendly water-based glue. Even the button at the heel is eco-friendly as it’s made from coconut palm.

When you think about it, giving your dog—an animal who’s instincts would have him eating and exposed to only what nature made available—toys that are made from synthetic materials and harsh chemicals seems a bit contrary to their nature. Sort of like giving your dog treats laden with food dye and artificial flavorings so they resemble chocolate chip cookies in smell and appearance. It may seem cute and appealing to you, but what dogs really need are natural items that won’t harm their systems, which are designed to function with what they would get in the wild. Since you’re the leader of the pack, however, it’s up to you to bring home items that are safe and natural instead of suspicious and synthetic (like certified organic dog treats with only natural ingredients).
For dog toys, we’re loving the certified-organic hemp dog toys from Simply Fido. These toys make use of a resource that’s sustainable to begin with (hemp) and add extra eco-points by growing it organically and keeping chemicals out of the picture. The resulting toys are 100% non-toxic; even the dye used to color them is natural and made from things like cloves and gardenia seeds. They’re also shipped in handmade boxes crafted from recycled materials. And while you might anticipate that certified-organic hemp would make these dog toys un-affordable, they’re actually pretty competitive to conventional dog toys at $8.59 each. Click here to read more
