A Big Victory Against BPA

Before you start thinking “another BPA post?” know that today the news is not only a big deal, but also good: Six of the largest manufacturers of baby bottles have agreed to voluntarily ban the use of BPA from their baby bottles. The decision was made in response to pressure from consumers and members of the scientific community who raised concern over the potential health issues in bisphenol A (BPA)–which are especially worrisome in infant-related products–and called for companies to seek out alternative plastics. The brands that are switching to safer plastics include Avent, Gerber and Playtex and make up the most popular baby bottle brands in the country.

Part of the credit for the shift is due to Conneticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who wrote to the companies strongly urging them to eliminate BPA after seeing the studies that linked the chemical to health problems in the developing systems of infants and children and enlisted the help of fellow attorneys general in his quest.
