Party Responsibly

When you have friends and family over for a backyard BBQ, an uber green host wouldn’t dream of serving drinks and organic fare with plastic disposable cups, plates and cutlery and you shouldn’t either. That said, don’t think you have to take your best breakables outside either. Instead, swap those  single-use, landfill-clogging, petroleum-derived products, for biodegradable and recycled options.

Biodegradable: It makes sense to use outdoor party or picnicware that will biodegrade, right? SpudWare utensils, as the name implies, is made from 80% potato or corn starch and 20% soy or other vegetable oils so they’re 100% compostable after use. The same goes for cups, who’d guess that transparent plastic-like cups could be made from corn? Again, they’re 100% compostabe and a much better solution for quick party cleanup than plastic.

Recycled: Preserve answered the disposable picnicware problem with a collection created from recycled plastics like yogurt containers. The tumblersplates and cutlery look and perform like the un-green disposables you used in the past, but they get an eco friendly stamp of approval. Click here to read more

Start With a Clean Plate

Even though automatic dishwashers are often the most eco-friendly option, requiring less energy and water than hand washing,  sometimes you need to clean up by hand. But traditional dishwashing liquids can leave chemical residue on your plates, glasses, pots and pans–the very things you eat off of every day! Not to mention where those chemicals go after they get washed down the drain–those bad ingredients can make their way into waterways, impacting aquatic life. That same chemical residue gets left on your hands, too. Dishpan hands are in part, due to the drying, harsh detergents found in dishwashing liquid.

So start combating dirty dishes with some more natural. Ecover Dishwashing Liquid is a one such eco product. The formula is biodegradable so it’s gentle on the environment and your hands. In fact, the Chamomile & Marigold variety soothes hands with milk whey. Ecover recently launched a new fragrance: Grapefruit and Green Tea. The scent comes from plant based ingredients rather than synthetics and the Green Tea extract can help eliminate odors naturally.
