Sustainable Surf’s Up!
Daily Greenz #160

The regulation of many of the materials used to make surfboards has had a lot of surfers bumming hard. Most notably, the 2005 closing of Clark’s Foam due to failure to comply with EPA regulations saddened the entire surfing world. Clark’s Foam was once the foremost manufacturer of blanks, large pieces of foam used to construct boards.
Luckily, the ban of these toxic materials doesn’t have to mean days in the green room are over. Though non-synthetic materials hadn’t performed as well in the past, surfers can be stoked to ride the waves on an eco-friendly board like Gary Linden’s Custom Agave Singlefin.
The board is crafted from dead agave, a sustainable, durable, light, and flexible material. The agave for Linden’s Singlefins is gathered in Southern California deserts and manipulated into smooth-riding boards over a 60 hour process.
Eco-conscious surfers can also green their favorite hobby with wetsuits made of eco-preferable material, like Patagonia’s R2 or R3 wetsuits, which are made from chlorine-free merino wool blended with recycled polyester.
