Thank you to all the readers, shoppers, bloggers, retailers, advertisers, designers, partners and bartenders that have allowed us to make it this far!  There’s much more to do, so we’ll keep you updated here on our blog and on twitter.

An Earth Day Eco-Kit

Earth Day is just a couple week away and it’s a great time to get serious about greening your home. There’ll be plenty of events on the actual day (April 22) and even during the entire week, but we’ve assembled a starter kit for going green that you can use to take your Earth Day actions up a notch. You can pick and choose green products that work for what your specific environmental goals are or order them all to get your green home makeover started right away. All the items are easy to incorporate into your life and many of them will save you money for years to come. You can even use them to assemble a green gift package to help someone you know get eco-friendly.

Brita Water-Filter Pitcher, $24.99

American’s consumption of bottled water peaked in 2006, with 50 million water bottles used (the equivalent of 912 million gallons of oil), but that doesn’t mean we’ve cut out the habit completely. The numbers are still incredibly high and for what purpose? Bottled water is often tap water—sometimes even tap water that has undergone less testing than what you’d drink from your own tap—and the habit is expensive. By purchasing a water-filtering pitcher, like this Brita Space Saving Pitcher, you’ll get enough water to fill 300 standard bottles, and that’s just on only one filter. Plus, by storing it in the fridge, you’ll have ice cold water to drink that’s just like what you crave in bottled varieties.

Reusable Water Bottle, $20.99

A Brita pitcher is only half the solution if you like your water to be transportable, the other key component is a reusable water bottle. Some people balk at the upfront costs, but it’s actually equal to price you’d pay for drinking about 10 bottles of water; after that you’ll be saving money each time you sip. Although there are a lot of options, a Sigg bottle, like this Simply Eco-Logical one,  is a popular choice because it contains no BPA, is incredibly durable and 100%  recyclable after you’re finished using it (if you ever are, these things last a long time).

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb (CFL), from $1.69

Although traditional incandescent light bulbs are usually under a dollar per bulb, the lifetime costs are quite high, both for you and for the environment. By switching out your old light bulbs for CFL bulbs, you can save more than $30 per bulb during the course of its lifetime and prevent greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. In fact, CFL light bulbs are such a bright idea that some countries are phasing out incandescent bulbs all together. If your concern about the mercury content in CFLs is keeping you from upgrading, you should know that the mercury amount is very, very small and as long as you don’t break the bulb, will never be released into your home.
