Sigg Still Feeling Backlash from BPA Controversy

sigg ceo steve wasik apologizes for bpa.jpg

If Sigg CEO Steve Wasik was hoping he’d be able to apologize for the trace amounts of BPA contained in the Sigg bottle liners prior to August, 2008 and move on with life un-affected, he’s quickly finding that won’t be the case. Since his first apology letter, in August, announcing the BPA inclusion in Sigg bottles, Wasik has been writing follow up apology letters (including one for the Huffington Post), establishing an exchange program for the BPA-containing Sigg bottles from pre-August 2008, and even losing a beneficial co-brand.

The controversy ignited over the late release of the information that Sigg bottles, which many consumers assumed were completely BPA-free, contained a very small amount of BPA in their liners. Although Sigg did repeated testing on all their bottles to ensure that the BPA was in no way leaching into contents, they eventually decided to eliminate the BPA-containing liners for a new liner made without BPA. The change took place one year before Sigg even notified the public to the BPA in the original liners, angering many Sigg users who thought their bottles were BPA-free, despite Sigg never stating the bottles as such (the company maintained that it couldn’t release manufacturing details because of the liner maker’s secret formula and assured that no BPA was leaching into bottles). A Footprint-Free Hiking Boot

patagonia-hiking-boot

It’s that time of year again, time to pack your biggest backpack and hit the dusty (or rocky or indiscernible) trail for some serious trekking. But this year as you stride over the beauty that is the great outdoors, leave only quick-fading footprints in the dirt, instead of carrying with you a carbon footprint from your gear that will linger longer and contribute to the very problems our environment—which you enjoy so much—is facing. Work from the ground up with a pair of hiking boots that give equal attention to practicality and sustainability, the Patagonia Nomad hiking boots.

From a planet-preserving perspective, these Patagonia hiking boots put heavy emphasis on reusing existing materials, with a recycled insole, outsole, midsole, and footbed. In short, nearly everything on and in the Nomad was something else before it was a shoe. For the new materials earthy-friendly methods were utilized, like choosing cork—a renewable resource—for the footbed and tanning the leather in ways that meet environmental stewardship standards. Green Gear for National Walk to Work Day

Tomorrow, Friday April 3, is National Walk to Work Day. The event is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services because Americans can turn their commute into a healthy opportunity to exercise, but the eco-friendly advantages shouldn’t be forgotten either. Think of all the pollution and fuel that could be saved if everyone across the country participated. So get ready to hoof it in style with some eco products made for walking.

Start with a cute pair of Satire ecoSNEAKS from Simple Shoes. After all, just because you’re doing your part for the planet, it doesn’t mean you have to look like you just stepped out of an 80s movie wearing clunky white Reeboks with your skirt suit! Simple Shoes made this sustainable pair out of black and white checkered silk, a natural protein fiber created by silk worms. But the green details don’t stop there: these shoes have Certified Organic cotton linings, laces made from recycled plastic bottles and 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms. GreenTip: Make an Environmental Ally

Conservation Alliance

It’s a big task taking on the carbon culprits and eco-enemies of our planet, but the good news is that you’re not in it alone. Across the earth, and on a smaller scale, America, there are millions who want to protect what we have and preserve what we can. Some are individuals–Davids battling a giant Goliath–and some are large-scale organizations full of people working together to get it done. If you want to pool your efforts with an organization that is truly making a difference for our planet, we suggest the Conservation Alliance.

Founded in 1989 by a group of four outdoor-focused companies (Patagonia, Kelty, REI and The North Face), the Alliance functions similar to a club, except where most annual club dues go to the activities of the club, Alliance dues are contributed to conservation projects all over North America. And with membership skyrocketing from 4 companies to over 200, those dues can make a big difference–an over $7 million difference, in fact, and one that’s saved more than 39 million acres of land.

By now you might be wondering how an organization who’s primary participants are major outdoor companies is something you can take part in, but the recent interest in environmental action and all over excitement about the Conservation Alliance’s powerful progress have led them to open up ways for any individual to get involved.
