Out with the old, in with the new

Daily Greenz #77

If you’ve been looking around your apartment lately and saying to yourself, ‘how did I accumulate so much junk this year?’, consider recycling old items that you no longer need or want. If you can’t toss them into a recycling bin, here are some ways to get rid of the various odds-and-ends.

If you have an old pair of sneakers that are no longer socially acceptable to
wear, Nike will gladly take them. Its Reuse-a-Shoe program recycles old sneakers to make surfaces for running tracks, basketball courts, tennis courts, and playgrounds. One of their current projects is to help rebuild New Orleans by creating sports surfaces for kids. So far, 20 million pairs of sneakers have been collected through this program. You can drop off yours at any Nike store. For more info, go to nike.com.

Recently upgrade to a new phone? Donate your old phone, PDA, or pager to CollectiveGood, who recycles all three kinds of electronics either by refurbishing them and donating them to a developing country or by breaking them down in an eco-friendly process. Drop off yours at any Staples store or mail it to CollectiveGood to get a tax credit for the donation. You can read more about it collectivegood.com.
