Sigg Shocks With BPA News

sigg-liners-contained-bpa

Trying to stay away from bisphenol A is tricky enough with the stuff lurking in the water cooler at work, the tupperware in the fridge, and even glass baby food jars at the grocery store; but a new announcement from Sigg reveals another difficulty—BPA in products that have a reputation of being BPA-free. Sigg bottles have long been thought of as the BPA-free alternative to the hard plastic Nalgene bottles that were popular before BPA concerns arose in recent years (Nalgene now makes BPA-free bottles), and business has boomed for the company as the aluminum bottles started showing up in the hands of people everywhere, the majority of whom preferred the Sigg bottles for their lack of BPA. Or, rather, who assumed that the Sigg bottles were without BPA.

Sigg CEO Steve Wasik sent out a letter this month alerting Sigg customers to the fact that up until a year ago, Sigg bottles did, in fact, contain BPA in their water-based epoxy liners. Click here to read more

Celeb Trainer Ashley Bordon’s Green Fitness Tips

Ashley Bordon

As a NIKE Elite Athlete, spokesperson for Nintendo’s Wii Fit and celebrity fitness trainer, Ashley Borden spends a lot of time traveling around the country to get her job done, meeting with clients like Natasha Bedingfield, Ryan Gosling and Taraji P Henson. A fairly carbon-heavy lifestyle. But now, she’s making changes to reduce her carbon footprint and make her workouts more sustainable. Here, five of her top tips for greener fitness:

1. Buy workout wear in sustainable fabrics. Borden likes Patagonia’s Organic Cotton Serenity Capris for their soft, stretchy feel, adjustable fold-over waistline and unrestricted mobility.

2. Bike, don’t drive. One mile in a car equals up to one pound of carbon released into the atmosphere. If you’re into getting fit, why not power your ride and get fit on the way to the gym, right? Borden suggests biking to the gym once a week.

3. Have an exercise swap day. If you’re more of a home gym kind of person, you might get carried away buying the latest fitness gadgets and DVDs. Minimize and plan to swap with your friends instead. Everyone will buy less and once you’ve mastered every Jillian Micheals workout or grown tired of your Thigh Master, a friend can take it instead of the landfill. Click here to read more

Cool To Its KOR

kor-one-reusable-water-bottle

It’s official: The KOR ONE may be the coolest reusable water bottle we’ve ever seen…in fact, it might even be the most functional, too. Yes, we know, there are some Sigg aluminum bottles out there spiffy enough for even a discerning designer to drink from, but there’s a futuristic aesthetic to the KOR ONE that makes it seem like the reusable water bottle of years yet to come.

It’s made from Eastman Tritan, which KOR doesn’t really explain, but they do make a point of stating that it’s a BPA-free material and that’s good news—after all, what good would an appealing outside be if the bottle leached toxic chemicals into your system with every sip? Arguably the next best feature of the KOR ONE, though, is its no screw-top lid design. Instead, there’s a hinge lid (which also functions as the handle) that can be flipped to the back of the bottle as you quench your thirst, saving you from having to stand holding your cap in one hand whenever you want a drink. No screw-top also means no threads irritating your mouth at the point of impact. On a more whimsical side, the caps include a spot for a KOR Stone, little disc-shaped tokens with a message that only you will see every time you’re rehydrating. Four KOR Stones are included with each bottle (each with a different sentiment), but soon you’ll be able to create your own on the KOR website. Click here to read more

Refillable Bottle for Filtered Water Fans

The problems with drinking bottled water seem endless these days from the high cost to your bank account to the high carbon cost of transporting, cooling and manufacturing the plastic bottles, not to mention the potential health risks that have been in the news recently surrounding the possibility of contaminants and the leaching of chemicals from plastic bottles. So what’s a water drinker to do? Buy a refillable bottle like those made by SIGG of course.

But what if said water drinker has high-maintenance taste and prefers not to drink plain old tap? EcoUsable came up with a smart solution by creating a refillable bottle that has a filter included. The EcoUsable 25 oz Filtered Water Bottle looks like a regular old stainless steel bottle form the outside, but inside lies a carbon filtration system that’s connected to the sport top. This way, every drop of water has to run through the filter before it enters your mouth. Click here to read more
