Sigg Still Feeling Backlash from BPA Controversy

If Sigg CEO Steve Wasik was hoping he’d be able to apologize for the trace amounts of BPA contained in the Sigg bottle liners prior to August, 2008 and move on with life un-affected, he’s quickly finding that won’t be the case. Since his first apology letter, in August, announcing the BPA inclusion in Sigg bottles, Wasik has been writing follow up apology letters (including one for the Huffington Post), establishing an exchange program for the BPA-containing Sigg bottles from pre-August 2008, and even losing a beneficial co-brand.
The controversy ignited over the late release of the information that Sigg bottles, which many consumers assumed were completely BPA-free, contained a very small amount of BPA in their liners. Although Sigg did repeated testing on all their bottles to ensure that the BPA was in no way leaching into contents, they eventually decided to eliminate the BPA-containing liners for a new liner made without BPA. The change took place one year before Sigg even notified the public to the BPA in the original liners, angering many Sigg users who thought their bottles were BPA-free, despite Sigg never stating the bottles as such (the company maintained that it couldn’t release manufacturing details because of the liner maker’s secret formula and assured that no BPA was leaching into bottles).
