Cleaning Products

We all like to see a home that sparkles and shines, where the floors look good enough to eat off of, and every surface passes the gloved finger dust test. But chances are, if you’ve accomplished all of that, you’re also living in a home in which toxic, carcinogenic chemicals emanate from nearly every surface. Even June Cleaver couldn’t abide that trade-off. Hopefully, with the growing popularity and availability of natural alternatives, the days of chemical-filled traditional cleaners are numbered.

You can find our selection of Mrs. Meyer's products here.

Sometimes the greener choice is simple. Other times, it might not work for you.

The convenience of pre-mixed cleaners.

Clean with a Conscience

A study on household chemicals found that in New Jersey and Massachusetts alone, 28 million pounds of toxic chemicals were used in soaps and other detergents. A whopping 259 million additional pounds of these chemicals were found in specialty cleaners and polishers. Some of these chemicals are known or suspected neurotoxins, carcinogens, or development toxicants.

Because of widespread green washing and unclear package labeling, it’s a wise idea to choose a brand that has always been focused on green cleaning. Mrs. Meyer’s uses naturally derived ingredients (like essential oils of eucalyptus and black pepper), safe synthetics and makes biodegradable products.

The Big Picture

At the very least, most household cleaners are rife with chemicals that irritate asthma and allergies and cause respiratory difficulties. Common ingredients like formaldehyde and methanol are known carcinogens while many cleaners have been linked to reduced fertility, death of embryos and birth defects. Besides these health concerns, consider where all the empty bottles end up – in landfills.

Babies and young children spend a lot of time indoors, often touching multiple surfaces and crawling on the floor. With so many question marks surrounding the implications of chemicals in conventional household cleaners, choosing products that provide better indoor air quality benefits both your family and the environment.
