We've all seen the
furniture mounded on the curbs waiting to be taken to the dump (or if it's lucky, picked up by a passerby), but the environmental effects of furniture go beyond just waste. Some
furniture items use pesticide-heavy cotton, some have
flame retardents that are made from toxic chemicals, and some pieces use virgin wood. Opting for
green furniture that's made from
FSC certified wood,
organic cotton, and
recycled materials will give you a
greener home overall.
Eco-friendly furniture doesn't have to mean hammocks and bean bag chairs, either (although we've got both and they're each made from recycled materials), there are stools made from old railway ties that blend vintage and current, and
organic hemp club chairs that have not even a trace of new age influence. One important thing to do when you're replacing your old furniture, though, is to be sure to donate usable items to a charity (or sell on Craigslist) and
recycle un-usable items whenever possible.
