Bamboo

This wonder plant is the fastest growing on the planet and can be harvested and replenished with little-to-no impact to the environment. It is an incredibly versatile plant used for everything from flooring and wall paneling to paper and fabrics. See our Topic on Bamboo for more information.

Biodegradable

A substance is biodegradable if it can be broken down by bacteria and other microorganisms into simple, stable products that will not harm the environment.

Blackwater

Blackwater is a relatively recent term used to describe water containing fecal matter and urine. It is the wastewater from toilets, latrines, and privies, containing feces or body fluids, and wastewater containing significant food residues or high concentrations of toxic chemicals from household cleaners. It is also known as brown water, foul water, or sewage. This blackwater can seep into underground drinking water and can also ultimately end up in oceans.

BPA

Bisphenol-A is a hormone-disrupting chemical considered to be potentially harmful to human health and the environment. It has been known that scratched and worn polycarbonate feeding bottles will leach this chemical into liquids. See our Green Topic on BPA for more information.
