Hemp
Hemp is harvested for its fibers for hemp clothing and seeds for hemp oil. With a relatively short growth cycle of 100-120 days, it is an efficient and economical crop for farmers to grow, however, industrial hemp cannot be commercially grown in the United States because it is erroneously confounded with marijuana. In fact, industrial hemp and marijuana are different breeds of Cannabis sativa. Smoking large amounts of hemp flowers can produce a headache but not a high! See our
Topic on Hemp Clothing for more information.

Hydroelectric energy
Hydroelectric energy is a renewable energy source dependent upon the hydrologic cycle of water. It involves evaporation, precipitation, and the flow of water due to gravity. It does not produce waste and carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas. Hydroelectric power comes from the potential energy of dammed water driving a water turbine and generator. This can, however, have a negative impact on local ecosystems.

Hydrofluorocarbons
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are composed entirely of carbon, hydrogen and fluorine. HFCs do not damage the ozone layer. HFCs, such as tetrafluoroethane, are now favored as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons, which cause ozone layer depletion. Hydrofluorocarbons are used in fire extinguishers and drugs to treat asthma.
