As with all electronics, Energy Star certification is a crucial label to look for when you're buying new home audio items and the greenest home audio equipment will have received the ranking. If you're someone who's willing to go a little old school, you can also consider picking up a solar-powered radio. Sure it's not exactly the height of sound quality and listening choices, but for trips to the beach or camping weekends it's a great choice that won't drain conventional energy. Exactly how eco-friendly your home audio gear will be, however, is determined after purchase. Make sure to power down items when not in use (use a power strip to avoid "vampire power"), buy and care for items with long-term use in mind, and find proper recycling facilities for your items after your home audio system has played its last song.
