The Energy Star program rates dehumidifiers and selecting a dehumidifier with Energy Star certification means using 10-20% less energy---by the year's end, you'll have saved enough energy to power a refrigerator for six months. Using a dehumidifier can also mean less mold in your house, and, in turn, less need to use cleaning products (and we think anything that means less cleaning is a good thing). There aren't Energy Star certified humidifiers because the Energy Star program doesn't cover them yet, but look for ones that include Microban technology to reduce mold and bacteria growth within the machine.
