All bright idea jokes aside, putting some thought into which light bulb you'll use to brighten your home is an important step in getting green. Although you might not expect it, lighting can account for 20% of your home energy use and the incandescent bulbs we've used for so long are far from the most eco-friendly choice. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) can save you more than $30 in their lifetime with their reduced energy use and you won't have to change CFL light bulbs nearly as often. The initial price is higher than an incandescent, but the lifetime cost is actually much lower. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are stiff competition, however, because they use even less energy, last even longer, and don't require mercury in their creation (which makes them easier to recycle and safer for the planet). LED light bulbs are still more expensive than CFL bulbs, but they're getting cheaper every day and may be the right choice depending on your lighting needs. You can find both CFL and LED light bulbs in Energy Star certified options, and we've got a selection that covers all price ranges. Compared to incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent light bulbs generally use less power and have a longer life. A CFL can typically save $30 in electricity costs over its lifetime.
Short for light-emitting diode, these lighting sources boast a number of consumer and environmental benefits. LEDs have an extremely long life span when compared to incandescent bulbs. In many cases, they last twenty times longer and consume less energy than incandescent bulbs. They’re durable and difficult to break thanks to the solid-state technology, while incandescent bulbs are extremely fragile and break easily.
