Office Depot is joining the Green movement through several efforts to make the office a more eco-friendly environment. Office Depot selects its products increasingly on its environmental benefits, particularly concerning waste, energy and chemical use reduction. More and more Office Depot products are now made out of recycled content, from recycled office chairs to recycled stationary such as writing pads and calendars made from post-consumer recycled content. OfficeDepot also promotes an eco-friendly office environment through its remanufactured cartridges and toners, which need 80% less energy than traditional cartridges to be manufactured. Remanufacturing just one cartridge saves 2.5 kilograms of plastic on average, from being dumped into a landfill.
Recycling is the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials, reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials, reducing energy usage, reducing air (from incineration) and water (from landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet and therefore highly sustainable. It is an incredibly versatile plant used for many everyday applications from flooring and wall paneling to paper and fabrics. Some of the processes through which Bamboo is turned from its raw form into usable products can have a negative environmental impact.
The process of reconditioning products to sound working condition. For example, remanufacturing one toner cartridge keeps an average of two and a half kilograms of plastic out of landfills. Also since up to 80% less energy is required to remanufacture cartridges (versus creating new ones) overall green house gas emissions are significantly reduced as well.
