At UncommonGoods, we want to change the way business is conducted by making sustainability a part of every decision we make. Each month, employees from all areas of our company gather to discuss how we can make UncommonGoods more environmentally friendly, socially responsible and an ever-more rewarding place to work. UncommonGoods is proud to be a founding member of B Corporation, an organization created to help customers understand the social and environmental impact of their purchases. The B seal means that a company has met the standards outlined in a comprehensive screening questionnaire, which evaluates a company on issues ranging from providing a living wage, to lessening their impact on the environment, to giving back to the community.

Tree Globes by Uncommon Goods Celebrate those dearest to you with elegant 100% recycled glass globes, featuring an interior glass trunk that branches out to support vibrant splashes of color. Handmade in Canada by artist Stephen Kitras. Tree of Family: Like the roots of a tree, family nourishes and encourages us to grow to limitless possibilities. The Tree of Family reminds us that no matter how far we branch out as individuals, our family is always there for support, for encouragement and above all for love.Tree of Friendship: Like each leaf on a tree our life is blessed with friends who help to define us as the individuals we are. Similarly, the changes of season that a tree undergoes is like the circle of friends that we've met throughout our lives. The Tree of Friendship reminds us to cherish each of our friends, the old and the new, as each one adds a unique leaf to our tree of life. Tree of Sisters: Sister can mean the one who was born into your immediate family or the "sister" who is your closest friend. Sisters are the ones that nurture you, support you, laugh and grow with you. Sisters are a little bit of childhood that can never be lost. A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life. A sister is a forever friend. Sold individually. Not intended as a tree ornament. Uncommon Knowledge: To make these pretty globes, artist Stephen Kitras first has to receive a shipment of broken glass from a supplier in Seattle that makes windows for cars, homes and offices. They send their broken shards to Kitras, who then melts them down in a furnace for 12 hours before creating his signature pieces. More

Kitchen Composter by Uncommon Goods Recycle waste into something wonderful! This unique, odorless indoor composting system ferments and pickles food waste in less than half the time of conventional composting methods using the Japanese method of Bokashi. And don't forget the beginner's guide to composting, which will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the wonderful world of fermentation. Convenient - Stores neatly under kitchen sink for easy access, every few weeks contents can then be buried in your garden. Large Capacity - Holds approximately 5 gallons of food waste. Air-Tight Lid - Ensures an ideal environment for anaerobic fermentation to take place, while controlling odors and deterring flies. Plastic Strainer & Spigot - Placing the plastic grate inside the bucket and then piling food waste on top of it separates the food waste from the liquid that accumulates at the bottom of the bucket. This liquid can be easily drained through the spigot and used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer for houseplants and garden.Bokashi - An all-natural compost starter containing beneficial micro-organisms that aids in fermentation. Once the bucket is full, it will take only 10 days to produce a pre-compost product ready to bury in the garden. After planting, the compost will be converted to rich topsoil in about one month. Compost inoculates the soils with beneficial and effective microorganisms which detoxify chemically treated soil, feeds the natural soil ecology, and attracts beneficial insects and nematodes. It also enhances soil fertility and increases plant yield and produce quality.>Each composter comes with a one gallon bag of bokashi. Additional one gallon bokashi refills available. Due to the 10-day cycle needed for fermenting, two composters are recommended to have a complete, always-running system. Click here to read about the benefits of composting. Recycling is the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials, reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials, reducing energy usage, reducing air (from incineration) and water (from landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.
An elastic material obtained from the latex sap of trees (especially trees of the genera Hevea and Ficus) that can be vulcanized and finished into a variety of products
Composting is a process in which solid organic materials are decomposed in the presence of oxygen through the action of bacteria and other microorganisms. This process is done by mixing together leaves, grass clippings, table scraps, and soil, and allowing the mixture to decompose into mulch, which is high in nutrients, and useful to fertilize gardens and flower beds.
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a reduced impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production.
FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.
